How accurate are the prophecies of God’s prophets...

But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.
Micah 5:1

How accurate are the prophecies of God’s prophets in the Old Testament! The prophet Micah (750–700 bc) already knew that the coming Messiah would be born in the city of Bethlehem.

The chief priests and theologians of Jesus’ time were aware of this and were convinced of it. Indeed, when the wise men from the East came and asked, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?”, the Jewish scribes were immediately able to tell King Herod. Besides the place of Jesus’ birth, the quoted prophet’s word mentions something else significant: Jesus’ heavenly origin. For although He was to be born of a woman, His origin is nevertheless “from of old, from everlasting” – a reference to His eternal existence.

Thus two extremely significant facts are combined in the Bible verse: Jesus Christ is God and man in one person. We cannot fathom or explain this mystery of His person. We can only recognise in amazement how both become evident in His life, in His death on the cross, as well as in His resurrection.

That Jesus was here on earth and finally died on the cross on Golgotha, few doubt. But that He is also the eternal Son of God, who became man and rose after three days in the grave and is now alive, is unfortunately doubted by many. But the Christian faith is based on the fact that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (John 20:31).

What a glorious person is the Lord Jesus Christ!

Today’s reading: Zechariah 12:1-14 · Mark 14:55-72
