Left alone

I looked for someone to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.
Psalm 69:20

Left alone
When the Lord Jesus was arrested, sentenced to death and crucified, no one stood by Him. No one came to His aid; everyone abandoned Him. He deeply felt this, as prophetically expressed in today’s verse.

On the night He was betrayed, He had called the eleven disciples “my friends” (John 15:14–15). What should one expect from a friend in a time of need? Wouldn’t you hope that he would stand by you? Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” However, the Lord Jesus experienced that all His disciples deserted Him when He was arrested and taken away in the Garden of Gethsemane. How bitter it must have been for Him!

A few hours later, Jesus stood before Pilate and was wrongly accused. What should one expect from a judge in this situation? Wasn’t it his duty to protect and acquit an innocent person from false charges? But what did Pilate do? Although he thrice declared, “I find no fault in Him” (John 18:38; 19:4, 6), he yielded to the pressure of the Jewish leaders and condemned the accused to crucifixion. Thus there was no help for Christ even from the justice system. Isaiah 59:16 was fulfilled: “He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor”.

Today’s reading: Exodus 7:14-25 · Luke 2:41-52
