The reproaches of those who reproach You...

Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, and the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.
Psalm 69:9

In today’s verse, we prophetically hear the Lord Jesus speaking as a man to His God.

“Zeal for Your house has eaten me up.” Christ energetically advocated for God’s cause on earth. Twice He cleansed the temple which the Jews had turned into a marketplace, even a den of robbers (John 2:14–17; Mark 11:15–17). It was His heartfelt desire that everything in the house of the LORD was consistent with divine holiness. Therefore, He fervently took action against anything that did not match God’s presence.

“The reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.” The Lord Jesus came to earth as the envoy of His Father and decisively represented God’s interests here. As a consequence, He faced the hatred and mockery of those who rejected and hated God.

These reproachers were mainly from the Jewish leadership. Although they were considered religious, their hearts were far from God. They hated Him and insulted Jesus, who stood up for God’s rights.

When He hung on the cross, they mocked, “He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God’” (Matthew 27:43). These words were not only directed against the crucified one but also against God, who did not save the one who stood up for His honour. How much Christ suffered under this reproach!

Today’s reading: Exodus 10:24-11:10 · Luke 5:1-11
