Being gentle

Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.
Philippians 4:5

Being gentle
When joy in the Lord fills our hearts, we can treat our fellow human beings with gentleness and forbearance. We delight in the fact that Jesus Christ is our Saviour, Shepherd, Lord, Advocate and High Priest. Therefore, we can relinquish our supposed rights and set aside our own desires.

On the other hand, when we pursue earthly things and focus on our own interests, it becomes challenging for us to be gentle and yielding. At that point, we show little of the mindset of our Lord, who gave us a perfect example of meekness and gentleness in His earthly life.

Forbearance prevents us from imposing our will and desires on those around us. Gentleness keeps us from seeking our own rights and passing harsh judgments on others. A mild, yielding attitude is not hidden from people and reflects well on the Lord Jesus, providing a good testimony to others.

To the exhortation to be gentle, the apostle adds, “The Lord is at hand.” The moment is near when the Lord Jesus will set everything right on earth. Every injustice will be punished. Until then, let us rather give up our rights and approach people with gentleness. Perhaps in doing so we can win them for the Saviour.

“ ... with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love,...” (Ephesians 4:2)

Today’s reading: Exodus 14:1-14 · Luke 6:20-30
