The reading experience

Whoever reads, let him understand.

Do you understand what you are reading?

Matthew 24:15; Acts 8:30

The reading experience
It’s great that you’ve opened this calendar! Maybe you read it regularly, or perhaps you picked it up today more “by chance”.

You might find yourself in a similar situation to the royal official from Ethiopia, as reported in Acts chapter 8. He had come from afar to visit Jerusalem, the centre of the Jewish religion, in order to worship. Now he was on his way back, reading with great interest in the book of the prophet Isaiah, which he had probably bought in Jerusalem. There he came across a puzzling passage. It spoke of a man compared to a lamb that is silent before its shearers. How was he supposed to understand that? Did the prophet Isaiah, who had written this text, speak of himself or someone else? Fortunately, he encountered the evangelist, Philip.

When we read the Bible, we don’t understand everything right away. But it wouldn’t be right to stop reading it because of that – because the Bible contains the wonderful message of God’s love for us, and much more.

When Philip explained the text, the royal official understood that it was about Jesus, the Messiah. This person is called the “Lamb of God” elsewhere in the New Testament. Thus seemingly difficult texts become understandable the more sincerely you read, think about them, and use reliable Bible commentaries.

We warmly invite you to engage in reading the Bible and to get to know God and His Son, the Lord Jesus, better and better. This calendar aims to help you a little with that every day.

Today’s reading: Exodus 16:1-12 · Luke 7:11-17

HOW PERSUADED?

In 2 Timothy 4:10, Demas - a co-labourer with Paul was floored by his love for the world. He became a victim of comfort. Today, many people are also becoming prayerless and shifting their or trust from God to uncertain riches. They are now tending towards the belief that money can fix everything. If you are in such...More

A LESSON FROM GOLIATH

At the first sight of David, Goliath despised him. He was amazed that the children of Israel could find no other man to fight him than a young boy. As if that was not enough, Goliath did not see any conventional weapon of war on David. So he asked, "Am I a dog?" The first lesson we have to learn from this story as...More

Always Be Humble

Who am Ithat you have brought me this far?' 2 Samuel 7:18 (NIV 2011 Edition)
A MEMBER of parliament took his little daughter to visit Westminster Abbey. As she stood looking up at its magnificent columns, her father asked, What do you think, sweetheart?' With childlike candour she replied, I was...More

Forgive And Move On (2)

Anyone who starts ploughing and keeps looking back isn't worth a thing to God's Kingdom!' Luke 9:62 CEV

If you're wise, you'll do four things:

(1) Focus on the road ahead. By looking in the rear-view mirror instead of what's up ahead, you'll end up in a ditch. Focus on the fact you've...More
