Sin in the life of the believer

My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
1 John 2:1

Sin in the life of the believer
The Apostle John warns us not to sin as children of God. The wonderful forgiveness we possess through faith in Jesus Christ should never lead us to treat sin lightly. From God’s perspective, it is not normal for us, as believers, to continue in sin.

Consider the following: On the one hand, we may still sin because the old nature remains in us and tempts us to do wrong; on the other hand, we no longer have to sin. Through the new life and the Holy Spirit within us, we have the ability and power to say no to sin. However, if we happen to stumble, having committed a wrong, we remain children of God and can be restored. We have Jesus Christ as our Advocate with the Father, who intercedes for us. His help is available to us at all times and in every case. This is a great grace.

Our Advocate convicts us through the Word of God, helping us to recognise and confess the wrongdoing we have committed. In doing so, He ensures that the strained relationship with our God and Father is restored through His fatherly forgiveness.

Our Advocate also exposes the cause of the misstep. Perhaps it was pride, self-confidence or recklessness. When we discover such ugly roots in our hearts and lives, we need to condemn and uproot them so that we don’t immediately stumble again.

Today’s reading: Exodus 28:1-14 · Luke 11:14-28

BE TRULY ROOTED

You can overcome the attacks of the devil if you can simply obey God's Word. Before taking on the devil, be sure of your salvation because the salvation of many today is questionable. Many are pretenders and have really never answered the altar call for salvation at any time. At the time they should be answering...More

YOUR FIRST LOVE

As a Christian, your heart ought to be aglow with genuine love for Christ, unless you are not genuinely saved as a result of having not truly repented from your sins even though you have confessed Jesus. At the new birth experience, the Holy Spirit regenerates our spirit and fills it with deep and pure love for...More

Imitation or Genuine?

"All the prophets were prophesying before them. Then Zedekiah said, 'This is what the LORD says' All the prophets were prophesying this as well." - 1 Kings 22:10-12 NASB

Zedekiah understood what it meant to be a prophet. He knew the vocabulary and how to deliver prophecies. In similar ways, others...More
