In the mud

He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps.
Psalm 40:2

In the mud
After the snowmelt, the higher fields could already be sown. The lower-lying fields were still partly underwater. Here, two boys wanted to try out their new rubber boots.

They waded into the puddles and did not suspect that there were quite deep marshy spots. Suddenly, one boy sank deep into the mud. He tried to step backward to free himself, but it didn’t work. As he pulled one foot out of the mud, the other sank even deeper. The boots became heavier and heavier until both feet were firmly stuck in the mire.

The other boy found himself in the same situation. They became very frightened that no one would find them in time.

Then they saw a farmer in the distance. They shouted at the top of their lungs until the man noticed them. He hurried over and managed to pull them out of the swamp.

Sin is like a deep and pernicious bog. Often, we do something knowing it isn’t good. We believe we can “just dabble a little” and, if it gets dangerous, withdraw in time. Perhaps the first steps don’t lead directly into the mud, but gradually one slips into the mire of sin from which one cannot free oneself.

What is the only tool in this situation? – Calling out! Calling out, like the two boys did. And to whom? To God! He hears us and directs our gaze to Jesus Christ, who died on the cross to save sinners. Only He has the power to pull us out of the mire of sin.

Today’s reading: Exodus 28:31-43 · Luke 11:43-54

Not I but Christ

Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

Not I but Christ
I have heard it said, "People should be allowed to be themselves." But I can find no scriptural basis to support this statement, for freedom "to be myself" is to...More
