Planning with God

If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.
James 4:15

Planning with God
In our lives, we need to constantly think ahead and make plans. When we are young, we face questions about education, job opportunities or places to live. As parents, we have decisions to make in raising our children. Even the step into retirement often requires some preparation and planning.

As Christians, we plan according to the motto: “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” This guiding principle shouldn’t be just a phrase but a lived reality.

o We seek the will of our Lord because we don’t want to act independently of Him. However, if we first make our own plans and then ask the Lord to guide us, it becomes a challenge to discern His will. From the beginning, our desire should be to plan and decide in dependence on the Lord. He Himself sets the perfect example. Every morning, He opened His ear to hear what God commanded Him (Isaiah 50:4–5).

o In all our thoughts and plans, it should always be clear to us that we do not know how long we will still be on earth. We cannot control our future. Our life is in the hands of our God. David also knew this, as one who had to flee from King Saul for many years and was often close to death. He prayed, “My times are in Your hand” (Psalm 31:15).

Today’s reading: Exodus 39:32-43 · Luke 18:31-43

Don't be dismissive

By pride comes nothing but strife, but with the well-advised is wisdom.' Proverbs 13:10 NKJV

Why do we dismiss input that could help us? Sometimes it's to protect our ego against a painful truth. When we have an entrenched opinion, we can easily adopt a dismissive approach towards the thinking of...More
