How do I become a Christian?

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
Ezekiel 36:26

How do I become a Christian?
Ole Hallesby (1879–1961) was a theology professor in Oslo. Even during his studies, he couldn’t imagine becoming a Christian as he was repelled by devout Christians. He thought their fear of God was exaggerated, their singing and prayers on their knees were over the top, and he found their discussions about the Bible intrusive and too personal. He thought it would be a sacrifice to become like them.

Later, after he himself had become a believer, he wrote: “If someone keeps postponing his decision to repent despite the urgent calls of Jesus, because he believes it’s impossible to break free from love of the world and sin and to feel comfortable with God and His people, then I want to tell him something that is very important to me: You have misunderstood the offer of salvation. Becoming a Christian does not mean forcing yourself to abstain from all the sins you love and to perform various religious practices like prayer, reading the Bible, listening to the Word of God, and having fellowship with believers – all things you have no desire for.

No, becoming a Christian means being freed from the old unwilling spirit and receiving a new mindset. ... The Lord Himself wants to create a new willing spirit within you. That is the wonder of salvation.”

Hallesby is right: salvation involves a fundamental change inside a person. However, this change doesn’t just happen without any effect upon the life; no, it is accompanied by repentance and faith. That’s how I become a Christian!

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 2:1-37 · Luke 19:39-48

JESUS IN YOUR BOAT

No doubt, life in a sense is like the sea. A characteristic of the sea is that storms of varying degrees arise, putting the lives of those sailing on it in jeopardy of being drowned. In Jesus' Name, the storms of life will not be able to drown you, your family and your business. While literal storms are natural...More
