Chrysostom

When they saw the boldness of Peter and John and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marvelled. And they realised that they had been with Jesus.
Acts 4:13

Chrysostom
John of Antioch (344/349–407), called Chrysostom, wrote in the 4th century ??: “If those say that the apostles were uneducated men, then we will add and say that they were ignorant, poor, lowly, and obscure men. ... These ignorant, uneducated, and unschooled men defeated and scattered the wise and the powerful, the tyrants and those inflated with wealth, honour, and other external goods, ... Consider: the fisherman, the tentmaker, the tax collector, the ignorant, the uneducated – they came from distant Palestine, defeated and overcame all the philosophers and the most skilful orators in a short time, despite the many dangers and the resistance of peoples and kings, ... princes, peoples, nations, cities, barbarians, Greeks, philosophers, rhetoricians, sophists, historians, laws, courts, various punishments, countless and diverse forms of death. Nevertheless, all this was defeated and scattered like light dust by the preaching of those fishermen.”

To this day, persecution of Christians and intellectual attacks on the Bible persist. Yet the Bible remains the most read and translated book in the world. God will guard and support the spreading of His Word all over the world even though it sometimes may look as if it might disappear and be suppressed. The power of God’s love cannot be stopped!

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 25:15-38 · Romans 2:8-16

YOU CAN BE HIS WITNESS

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

...when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem...
Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
