The sin register
“Check Your Sin Register” reads a headline in the newspaper. It happens so quickly and easily that a person becomes a traffic offender, often resulting in points on one’s driving record. Serious traffic offences are listed and archived centrally. Anyone who wants to know if his driver’s licence is at risk can request a free report from the authorities.

Imagine if we could peek into our personal sin register with God. We need to remember: God’s eyes range throughout the whole earth, and nothing escapes Him. “And there is no creature hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13). Shouldn’t we be alarmed when we think about our overloaded “sin register” with God? Yes, our sins separate us from God and deserve His just punishment.

But there is hope: the Israelite King David once expressed this experience in prayer: “I acknowledged my sin to you, and my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the LORD’ and You forgave the iniquity of my sin” (Psalm 32:5). Points on a driving record are deleted after a probationary period. But with God, our sins are only erased and forgiven when we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Since He suffered and died on the cross in God’s judgment, God is free to offer forgiveness to every sinner who comes to Him in repentance and confession.
