There’s a time for speech

From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Matthew 4:17

There’s a time for speech
When the Lord Jesus performed His public ministry in Israel, He preached the Word of God. From the beginning, the listeners realised that He taught quite differently from the Pharisees and scribes: “And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes” (Mark 1:22). What was the difference?

1. Before them stood not a man but the Son of God, who spoke to them with divine authority and perfection.

2. He did not present them with human opinions or Jewish traditions but preached the Word of God which works powerfully.

3. The Lord spoke as a prophet from the presence of God. What He said to the people touched their hearts and consciences.

With words of grace and truth, He led sinners to salvation. This was experienced by the woman from Samaria who met Him at the well. Later she told her fellow citizens, “Come, see a man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” (John 4:29).

His enemies repeatedly tried to catch Him in His speech. Yet all their cunning questions only revealed His perfect wisdom, leaving them astonished and silent.

The officers sent by the chief priests and Pharisees had to testify, “No man ever spoke like this Man” (John 7:46).

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 31:15-26 · Romans 5:11-16

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
