The unknown witness

God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation.

Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.

2 Corinthians 5:18, 20

The unknown witness
One evening, a friend of ours was approached on the street and asked to act as a witness for a will that a notary was to certify on a deathbed. Since the situation was urgent, our friend agreed, even though he knew neither the patient nor the notary. After the formalities were completed, he took the opportunity to turn the thoughts of the man, who would soon appear before God, to the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. “Your earthly affairs are now settled,” he said softly. “You’ve made your arrangements. But are you sure everything is in order for heaven?”

The dying man’s face showed surprise and uncertainty. Sadly, he wasn’t prepared for his great journey ahead. The Christian continued, “You need to be reconciled with God, and you need that now. How can you leave this earth without being sure that your sins are forgiven?”

As simply as possible, our friend testified the gospel to the dying man in his final hour. The man believed the message of God and took refuge in the Saviour. As the “unknown witness” bid farewell, the dying man could thank him for his service in earthly matters, but also for the infinitely more important service he had rendered to his soul.

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 34:1-22 · Romans 7:1-6

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; ...More

Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
(2 Peter 3:18)

God in His grace has centered every blessing for us in Christ. Without Christ, we have nothing, nothing but our sins; with Christ we have all things, and therefore want nothing in addition to Christ. As...More

SPIRITUAL WARFARE I

When we are told to put on the whole armour of God, one thing becomes clear instantly. This is the fact that there is a God. We cannot be talking of the armour of God if there is no God. Anyone who thinks that there is no God is a fool (Psalm 14:1). You have to pray that God would reveal Himself to you. The...More
