It’s okay to ask why

Why do You stand far off, O L Why do You hide in times of trouble?
Psalm 10:1

It’s okay to ask why
The Bible shows us that we can also ask God our “why” questions. Some examples: The sons of Korah ask God, “Why have You forgotten me? ... Why do You cast me off? ... Why do You hide Your face from me?” (Psalm 42:9; 43:2; 88:14). The songwriter Asaph reflects on the sad state of his people and asks, “O God, why have You cast us off forever? Why does Your anger smoke against the sheep of Your pasture? ... Why do You withdraw Your hand, even Your right hand?” (Psalm 74:1, 11).

As humans, we never have the right to put God on trial. No, God is not obligated to give us answers. But He is gracious and allows us to express all our sadness and despair to Him and to ask Him our “why” questions.

Those who come to God “with prayer and supplication”, while not forgetting to thank Him for everything they have received from God, will experience that the “peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,” enters their hearts (Philippians 4:6–7). Some of this inner peace, where the prayerful person finds rest, is found in the psalms quoted above. Psalm 42 contains the repeated exhortation: “Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance” (verse 5, 11). And Asaph also states in Psalm 74: “For God is my King from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth” (verse 12).

Yes, God has only good intentions for me. I should hold on to that.

Do you have “why” questions? Then bring them to God in prayer to experience His peace!

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 46:1-28 · Romans 12:9-15

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

...when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem...
Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
