For a person to be sealed with...

In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise...
Ephesians 1:13

For a person to be sealed with the Holy Spirit, he must both hear and believe the word of truth and the gospel of salvation.

What do we understand by the word of truth? This refers to what the Bible says about God and about mankind:

o The truth about God: The Bible shows us that God is holy and condemns every sin. “You are of purer eyes than to behold evil …” (Habakkuk 1:13). Therefore, He must punish all the wrongdoing that people commit.

o The truth about mankind: The Word of God clearly testifies that man is an incorrigible sinner. “There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable …” (Romans 3:10–12).

It isn’t pleasant for us to believe the word of truth. We must accept that through our sinful lives, we have made ourselves guilty before God and deserve His punishment.

Fortunately, God also shares with us the gospel of salvation. Through the work of the Saviour on the cross, a just foundation has been established so that the holy God can justify sinners. The Lord Jesus Christ suffered for the sins of others there and died for lost people. Therefore, God pronounces anyone who believes in His Son free from punishment. How great is His grace!
