For our son’s birthday, he received his...

And He said to them, Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.
Luke 12:15

For our son’s birthday, he received his desired T-shirt from a sports equipment manufacturer. He immediately put it on and proudly wore it all day.

The next morning, when he appeared for breakfast in the gifted top, I asked him, “Tell me, does this T-shirt make you happy?” – “Not as much as yesterday,” was his brief answer.

It’s the same with all material gifts or acquisitions: they don’t give us the deep, lasting joy we truly desire. Even if we own a lot we can still be dissatisfied. The Lord Jesus explains in today’s verse that we will not find our happiness in material possessions.

The Son of God wants to give us what brings us genuine, lasting joy. To this end, He became a man over 2,000 years ago and died on the cross: “I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). Those who believe in Him receive eternal life, in a close and joyful relationship with God. That is a life in abundance.

Sometimes, as believers who know the Lord Jesus as their personal Saviour, we forget that our happiness doesn’t lie in material possessions. We accumulate many things and seek our fulfilment in them again and again. However, it is often short lived. Lasting joy is found only in living communion with our God and in the spiritual blessings He bestows.

“For our citizenship is in heaven ...” (Philippians 3:20)

Today’s reading: Leviticus 11:29-47 · Psalms 57:1-11

(Mark 4:11)

The Lord Jesus told His disciples that they would be given an understanding in "the mystery of the kingdom of God." He also spoke of another class of people to whom everything would be spoken in parables; these He described as, "them who are without." How solemn that God should...More

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
