Is that the meaning?

For who knows what is good for man in life, all the days of his vain life which he passes like a shadow?
Ecclesiastes 6:12

Is that the meaning?
To go to work or get up without having any work – is that the meaning of life? To spend evenings alone, with family or friends – is that the meaning of life? Media, opinions, shallow entertainment – is that the meaning of life? Hoping for a jackpot in the lottery – is that the meaning of life? Partying hard on weekends – is that the meaning of life?

Surveys show that more and more people see the purpose of their lives in happiness and pleasure. But there are also people who want to help create a better society. Remarkably, many young people belong to this group.

Being happy, enjoying life, creating a better world – is that the purpose of life? Do we find true happiness through more leisure time, more consumption, or more commitment to a better world? According to the Bible, our life only has real meaning when God plays the leading role in it. Then our life is not like a shadow, lacking substance and soon disappearing, but then it has an eternal perspective.

It is God who has given a beginning to all matter and all life, including me personally. Everything is based on a plan, so that the existence of everything visible has a meaning and a purpose. Moral values like love and faithfulness are also of lasting value for mankind. Faith and hope are not empty words but are full of substance. We need to recognise what’s true and what’s false, and what the ultimate cause of man’s perversity is: evil and sin.

At the same time, we learn about the grace of God: that He sent His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ to abolish sin and to reconcile all things to Himself. Whoever entrusts himself to the eternal God through the Lord Jesus finds the true meaning of life.
