He who prophesies

But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.
1 Corinthians 14:3

He who prophesies
Today’s Bible verse is about the proclamation of the Word of God in the assembly. First, the question arises: What is prophecy? The biblical answer to this is found in 1 Peter 4:11: “If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God.” This means that the speaker proclaims exactly the message from the Bible that God has instructed him to give for that moment. He is the mouthpiece of God to speak into the lives of the listeners without knowing their situation. This is only possible if he is dependent on God and led by the Holy Spirit.

In today’s verse, three effects of prophecy are presented:

Edification: The Word of God builds us up in our faith and strengthens us in truth. What we hear is spiritually beneficial to us. It helps us to grow in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus and to make progress as Christians.

Exhortation: The biblical message speaks to our conscience and shows us the dangers on the path of faith. The proclaimed Word warns us of a wrong step or encourages us to stay on the right path.

Comfort: The Word of God that we receive comforts our hearts and gives us new courage. It reminds us of the sources of help we possess for our spiritual life and directs our thoughts to the never-ending grace of God.

Today’s reading: Judges 6:14-27 · 2 Corinthians 6:1-10
