God speaks through His Word

The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; ... the statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart.
Psalm 19:7–8

God speaks through His Word
Psalm 19 shows us that and how God speaks: He speaks through creation – here especially through the starry world (verses 1–6) – and He speaks through His Word; back then the law of Moses, today the entire Bible (verses 7–11).

The great German philosopher and theologian Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) once wrote as a conclusion to one of his philosophical works: “Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe: the starry sky above me and the moral law within me.” The first part of the statement is correct and corresponds to the first verses in this psalm. But the second part of his statement shows the limits of human philosophy. Since Kant rejected the inspiration of Holy Scripture, he turned away from the Bible and made the human conscience his standard. However, this is a poor guide!

God has given us the Bible as a reliable guide: It “converts the soul”, “makes wise the simple”, “rejoices the heart” and “enlightens the eyes” (verses 7–8). Yes, the value in God’s words is immeasurable, and “in keeping them there is great reward”! They are “more to be desired … than gold, yea, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey the honeycomb” (verse 10). Anyone who reads the Bible will confirm this!

The Bible shows us our sins – whether conscious, unconscious or hidden (verses 12–13), but the Bible also shows us the One who forgives sins. Even David knew this person and called Him: “my strength and my Redeemer” (verse 14).

Christ also wants to be your Redeemer. Even today, you can find Him in His book, the Bible.

Today’s reading: Judges 7:9-25 · 2 Corinthians 7:10-16

CAN SATAN RIGHTLY ACCUSE YOU?

Besides discouragement, another weapon Satan uses often against believers is their weaknesses. He simply studies an individual for a period of time and not long after, he identifies the fellow's weakness and capitalizes on it. Take for instance Peter. Satan discovered that Peter is a cowardly person-lacking in...More

DON'T KILL YOURSELF FOR NOTHING

Do hope you are learning from our meditations through Psalm 73. It pictures to us the reality of everyday living. I do hope you are realizing that after all there is no point envying the prosperous wicked. Do not kill yourself for nothing. You have your life to live. Do not be a puppet dancing the...More

Hudson Taylor...

John 19:30

The parents of Hudson Taylor (1832-1905), the well-known missionary in China, were believers. From their example, he noticed early in life how helpful prayer and the Bible are.
His parents' exemplary life impressed him, and he endeavoured to be as good a Christian as they were....More
