In greatest need
With today’s Bible verse, the Lord Jesus expresses His feelings in His sufferings on the cross through a prophetic word:

“Be not far from Me.” How great was His pain when God turned away from Him during the three hours of darkness. He had trusted in God all His life and had always done His will. Yet, in the three hours of darkness, He was forsaken by Him as He bore the punishment for our sins and was made sin. In His distress, He cried out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Psalm 22:1). But He received no answer.

“Trouble is near.” After the three hours of darkness in which the Saviour stood in divine judgment for our sins, death followed. The Lord Jesus Christ had to sacrifice His life to complete the work of redemption. This trouble awaited Him. How difficult it was for Him, who committed no sin and in whom there was no sin, to suffer death as the wages of sin!

“There is none to help.” How painful it was for Christ to feel that He was receiving no help. The disciples had already deserted Him in the Garden of Gethsemane. Later, John stood at the cross, but he could not help his Lord. It was impossible for a human being to assist the Saviour as He was accomplishing the work of redemption. Alone He had to face the divine wrath against sin and lay down His life for lost sinners.
