How to become a child of God
To answer this question, it’s good to first see how it doesn’t happen:

o Not by blood: You don’t become a child of God through natural descent. Even if your parents are children of God, you are not necessarily one. God has children, not grandchildren.
o Not by the will of the flesh: You don’t become a child of God through works or by your own willpower. Even natural birth occurred without our will.
o Not by the will of man: You don’t become a child of God because others want it, no matter how strong their will or influence might be.
We don’t become children of God through our parents, ourselves, or anyone else – through whom then? Through God. Through Him alone. We must be born of Him.

Explaining this new birth is difficult, but experiencing it is simple: whoever recognises that he is lost and believes in the Lord Jesus Christ has been born anew. Then he is a child of God – forever.

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! (1 John 3:1)
