A threefold reward
Although David composed Psalm 16, in today’s Bible verse we hear the Lord Jesus speaking to God. What He says describes the reward He received from God for His perfect life on earth:

1. “You will show me the path of life.” God raised Jesus from the dead. The path of life did not end for Him in the grave but continued after His resurrection. In Revelation 1:18, He explains it Himself: I “was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore.” He rose to live as a man forever.
2. “In Your presence there is fullness of joy.” God took the Lord Jesus up into heaven, where He, as a man, is in the presence of God. He thought of this great joy as He walked His difficult path to Golgotha and endured the shame of the cross (Hebrews 12:2). Although He experienced the joy of communion with God in His earthly life, in heaven He enjoys fullness of joy in the presence of God.
3. “At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” God said to Christ, “Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool” (Psalm 110:1). The Lord Jesus received this place of honour because He greatly honoured God in His earthly life and in His death on the cross. Only He is worthy to sit at the right hand of God.
