As Christians, we are used to giving thanks before meals. However, there is a danger that our prayer of thanks becomes a mechanical routine. To speak it more from the heart again, let us think of some examples in the Bible:

o The Lord Jesus gave thanks for the food He distributed to the many people who were with Him: “Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes.” (Matthew 14:19)

o When the Lord was visiting the disciples in Emmaus, He took the place of the host and gave thanks for the food: “Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.” (Luke 24:30)

o On the ship journey to Rome, Paul didn’t hesitate to thank God for the food before his fellow travellers: “And when he had said these things, he took bread and gave thanks to God in the presence of them all; and when he had broken it he began to eat.” (Acts 27:35)

When we are truly grateful to our God and Father for every meal, our prayer of thanks before eating will come from the heart. We can also thank Him repeatedly for the greatest gift – for His Son, whom He has given to us as a Saviour.
