Can a person be sure of his salvation? (2)

Jesus ... said to the paralytic, Son, your sins are forgiven you.
Mark 2:5

Can a person be sure of his salvation? (2)
The dying soldier had asked the chaplain the question: “Is there anyone who is sure that God has forgiven his sins?” She couldn’t give him an answer, but she read some Bible verses on the matter in her room. She realised that she had never paid attention to these verses about the forgiveness of sins before. She had confessed her sins to God and hoped that He had forgiven her and would save her – but she had considered it presumptuous to know for sure that one is saved.

Then she remembered the incident with the paralysed man and his four friends. Here, the Lord Jesus clearly and unequivocally says, “Your sins are forgiven you” – without any ifs or buts. The chaplain wondered why she had never noticed this before.

Now she was sure that her sins had also been forgiven. Joyful about this, she returned to the bed of the fatally wounded soldier. She read him the Bible verses she had found and told him about the paralysed man to whom the Lord Jesus Himself had said, “Son, your sins are forgiven you”. As she read and spoke to him, the expression on the man’s face changed, because he heard the answer to the question that had been tormenting him so much in the face of death. He believed the words of God and trusted in the one who had also died for him.

Two people now saw clearly: the wounded soldier, who had only a short time left to live, and the chaplain, who now also told other people about the forgiveness that God gives and promises. Yes – we can be sure that we are saved and that God has forgiven our sins.

Today’s reading: 1 Chronicles 19:1-20:8 · Psalms 89:39-52

OF KEYS AND DOORS

Every apartment or compartment with a lock has its key. It takes a key to open the gate of a house and several keys to enter the house its rooms. If you have fridge, car or wardrobe, you will equally have their keys. From the foregoing therefore, it is apparent that several good things with value have their...More
