Me, the murderer of your husband

... to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins ...
Acts 26:18

Me, the murderer of your husband
He is 16 years old and wants to disappear from a youth camp in Austria. To do so, he “borrows” his group leader’s car. During his escape, he crashes into a police car, killing the policeman at the wheel. He is convicted, imprisoned, released, and then unable to cope with life “outside”. He commits several crimes, goes underground and is captured and imprisoned again, this time in Germany. There, he finds the Lord Jesus Christ.

After 14 years, he is released. Wanting to make amends, he goes to Austria. And then he sits opposite her, the woman whose husband he killed, and her children. Stammering, he says, “Years ago, you lost your husband and father in a car accident ... the driver was a boy ... and that boy was me ... I am so sorry!” He tells them how he was converted in prison and that he is here because Jesus wants him to make things right.

The family becomes restless, and the first tears flow. Then the widow stands up and embraces him, the murderer of her husband. She tells him that when her husband died, she knew he was with God. Since then, she has prayed daily for the guilty boy, that God would reach him and save him from the darkness he had fallen into. His confession is a prayer answered for her and her family.

Perhaps one of our readers also has a guilty conscience and is tormented by it: unforgiven guilt toward people and God. The Apostle Paul writes: “But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more” (Romans 5:20).

This grace of God, this path of forgiveness, is still open today – to every one of us.

Today’s reading: 2 Chronicles 13:1-12 · Revelation 2:18-29

It may be that Jehovah will look on mine affliction, and that Jehovah will requite me good for my being cursed this day. And David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hill's side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast...More
