Too good to be true
Someone once said to me: “I can’t believe that the gospel is true. You tell me that I have sinned (and you are right), and then you say that I can be saved without having to do anything myself. That’s too good to be true.” – But that’s exactly what the gospel says.

The law, the Ten Commandments, tells me what I should do – what I cannot do. It troubles my conscience because I clearly realise that I cannot stand before God as I am. The law says: “Be holy!” – but I am not holy; it says: “Be godly!” – but I am not. It says: “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself” (Luke 10:27) – and I know that I can’t do that. So, the law shows me how I should be – and how I will never be! The gospel, on the other hand, shows me how God is; it shows me His goodness, love, holiness and righteousness. It tells me that He has revealed Himself in the person and through the work of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Through the gospel, I learn how I can be saved, how I can believe and trust in Him, and how I can find joy in Him.

The law tells me what I am and what I am like; the gospel, however, shows me what God is like and what He has done through the Lord Jesus, and how He now brings me, one who has sinned, forgiveness and peace. All of this is grace – and all of this is brought to me solely by the gospel,

“For by grace you have been saved through faith” (Ephesians 2:8).
