The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ

For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
2 Corinthians 8:9

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ
The apostle Paul wrote today's text from the Bible to the believers in the city of Corinth. With good reason, he reminded them of the grace of the Lord Jesus. The Corinthians had not been disinclined to assist needy Christians in their suffering. They had made this good resolution some time previously. But it had been left at that without the necessary action. What might motivate them more to act than having their consciences awakened as to the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ?
This verse, which is a real pearl in the second epistle to the Corinthians, summarises the doctrine in the New Testament concerning the Person of our Saviour.
"Though he was rich". This goes back to eternity past and reveals His divine glory. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him nothing was made that was made" (John 1:1-3).
"For your sakes he became poor". This comprises His life, His suffering and His death on the cross as the four gospels describe them.
"That you through his poverty might become rich". This speaks of the abundant blessing and the glory into which we have been brought through Him and in Him. This glory we find in the epistles and the Revelation.
The entire story of our wondrous Lord and Saviour is thus: the supreme expression of grace.
Today's reading: Ezekiel ch. 24

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; ...More

What shall the baptized for the dead do if those that are baptized rise not at all? Why also are they baptized for them?
(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are "the dead," and who are those "baptized for the dead"? The next verse gives an important hint: "Why do we also endanger ourselves every...More

KEEP YOURSELF HUMBLE

Several years ago, I was on a visit to a parish of our church in Ilesha (a town in southwest Nigeria) on the same day that a Bible Study was to take place. Because I wanted to be blessed, I sat down in the congregation waiting for the Bible study teacher to commence the lesson for the day. However, an overzealous...More
