Believing and taking action

So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
Jonah 3:5

Believing and taking action
The prophet Jonah received the commission from God to announce judgment on the people of Nineveh, because of their wickedness. He went through the city, crying out to the inhabitants there: "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!" This short but clear message pricked the people's consicences. They believed what God had predicted and repented over their sinful life. The king gave his subjects this order: "Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. God saw that they did so and spared them the punishment.
Those people did not start discussing Jonah's warning: nor did they seek arguments to invalidate the message. They didn't assert: "This can't be true!" They simply believed what God had stated, took the necesary consequences and were saved.
God has an equally serious message for us, too. He has apppointed a day for the whole earth, when He will bring righteous judgment upon all mankind through Jesus Christ. Therefore He commands us not to repent in order to avoid the punishment. On the ground of the redeeming work of His Son, He wishes to pardon us even today. But He expects us to adopt a genuine change of heart and make a sincere confession of our sins.
How do we react to this message? Do we believe what God has told us and obey His call to repent and change our ways?
Today's reading: Ezekiel ch. 29

When You Have A Vision

I was not disobedient to the vision.' Acts 26:19 NIV

When God gives you a vision for your life, you need to know how to:

(1) Hold it. Your vision is governed by a time frame: If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place.' (Habakkuk 2:3 NLT) Some of us can...More

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (113)

He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, him my Father will honour.
John 12:25.26.
