Growth in the church

Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.
Acts 9:31

Growth in the church
Today's verse tells us how the church of God prospered in the early days. Although we today are no longer living in the heyday of Christianity, from this description, we learn many an encouraging, healthy lesson.
In various places in the land of Israel lived believers, who gathered to the Name of the Lord Jesus. They constituted altogether the church or assembly of God on earth. The Word of God emphasises four points regarding this living organism.
The church was at peace. This was not a matter of course, since Satan endeavours to cause disruption through resistance from outside and causing difficulties inside. How thankful we can be for peaceful times in which the church can prosper!
It was edified. Through the teaching of the Word of God, our new life is nourished spiritually so that our inner man can grow. We receive a foundation of faith and strengthen our relationship with our Redeemer.
Their number increased. It is a great blessing when others find faith and are added to the house of God as living stones. The church then grows visibly.
The believers walked in the fear of the Lord. The purpose of biblical teaching is always to encourage genuine godly fear in our conduct. We then wish to enjoy God's approval in all that we undertake.
Today's reading: Ezekiel ch. 38

Not I but Christ

Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

Not I but Christ
I have heard it said, "People should be allowed to be themselves." But I can find no scriptural basis to support this statement, for freedom "to be myself" is to...More
