Rich, and yet a fool (1)

And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
Luke 12:18-19

Rich, and yet a fool (1)
With this parable the Lord Jesus Christ made it aptly clear how foolish it is to trust in earthly possessions and lose sight of eternity in doing so. There was a farmer who did not know where to store his abundant harvests. Securing hard won success and living as long as possible from the fruit of one's labour, who doesn't wish for this? From the economic point of view, it was sensible. So long as things went well. It was a thoroughly rewarding objective.
However, some questions remain, questions that we usually like to avoid. Was that success the result of his own work, or did other circumstances make it possible? What would have happened, if economic depression, failed harvests or war had intervened? Isn't there a higher power that we cannot influence governing all events, namely our great, almighty God, who stands over our persistent demands? We deliberately avoid such questions and act as though we were obliged to no-one.
Then comes the decisive question: How far will our provision actually go? Can all our activity and success in the past really secure the future reliably? Read what God Himself has to say on the matter tomorrow in the words of Jesus Christ.
(to be concluded tomorrow)
Today's reading: Ezekiel ch.40 vv.1-23
