Men ought always to pray

And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.
Luke 8:1-3

It was part of Jesus' mission to preach the message of the kingdom of God everywhere. He called upon people to acknowledge God's rights over their life and to submit to His rule. Christ will one day return to the earth and enforce God's claims in power. Here, however, at His first advent, we hear the call of grace and see its liberating power.
Those who accompanied the Lord had experienced this power. Among them were not only the apostles but also women "who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities" besides others. They all followed Jesus and ministered to Him with their lives and their possessions.
Mary Magdalene is mentioned here in the gospels for the first time. In contrast to modern tales about this woman, there is no report in the Bible about moral faults in her life, but of demon possession. The release she had experienced motivated Mary and the other women to serve the Lord out of sheer love.
Mary Magdalene is mentioned later only at the burial and resurrection of Jesus. She received the important commission from the Lord to inform the disciples about His ascension to heaven (cf. John 20:1-18).
Today's reading: Proverbs 10:17-32
