Sufficient for the day is its own trouble

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Matthew 6:34; Isaiah 41:10

Sufficient for the day is its own trouble
Today's verse is not an excuse for being wanting in foresight. It is quite normal for us to recognise our duties and prepare for the next day, whether it be ensuring that the house is protected against forthcoming storms or doing schoolwork thoroughly so as to pass examinations. It is right to envisage problems that might arise, provide for our needs and prepare for any demands made of us.
But worrying about things is another matter; it is exaggerated pre-occupation with the next day, possible storms or examinations. One is not at ease and imagines the worst. Care focusses our attention on events and not on the One who controls them. So it has a negative effect on our spirit and even on our body. It can even paralyse and overwhelm us. God's command is absolutely clear: "Do not worry!" We have an omnipotent Father who loves and whose hand guides all things.
If we experience difficulties today, God gives us the strength and His directions to face them, but He does not give them in advance to face up to tomorrow's trials. Why not? If we already had His rely, we should probably cease confiding in Him tomorrow. His concern is to maintain in us, day by day, that faith that is so precious to Him, for without it, it is impossible to please Him (cf. Hebrews 12:6)
Today's reading: 1 Samuel 20:24-42

THE NON-LYING GOD (2)

In the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the ages of time, but has manifested in its own due season His word.
(Titus 1:2-3)

THE NON-LYING GOD (2)
I can lie. Titus could too, and so could the Cretans. But God can not lie. I can deceive. But...More

When You Have A Vision

I was not disobedient to the vision.' Acts 26:19 NIV

When God gives you a vision for your life, you need to know how to:

(1) Hold it. Your vision is governed by a time frame: If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place.' (Habakkuk 2:3 NLT) Some of us can...More

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (113)

He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, him my Father will honour.
John 12:25.26.
