Judas Iscariot

And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them.
Mark 14:10

Judas Iscariot - that man's name stands for scandalous betrayal. What led to it? In the third chapter of Mark's gospel, we read how Jesus called Judas and eleven others with him for his disciples. They are called the twelve apostles. For about three years, Judas enjoyed great privileges. Being constantly in the immediate presence of Jesus, He was able to hear His sayings and witness His miracles.
Judas cannot have looked like a scoundrel. He was one of Jesus' followers, to all appearances at least. But he had never truly acknowledged Jesus as His Lord. Maybe he hoped that his Master might one day be the King of Israel, and that he himself should get a good position in His kingdom. Jesus was certainly an impressive Person. His preaching was distinctive. But Judas did not have saving faith in the eternal Son of God, the Saviour of the world.
When things turned out otherwise, and it became clear that the leaders of the people rejected the Master and would not accept Him as king over Israel, but planned to kill Him, Judas saw his opportunity. He went to the high priests and betrayed Jesus for money. How terrible!
Soon, however, his conscience plagued him; he realised that the Christ he had betrayed was innocent. He had gambled with grace and lost. Finally Judas took his own life, an awful end. His soul came to the place of eternal darkness, far from God's presence (cf. Matthew 27:3-5;Mark 14:21)
Judas' example is a warning for us how dangerous it is to be hanger-on. We need to be true disciples of Jesus!
Today's reading: 2 Samuel 20
