The apostle Paul served Christ,...

And when Paul was now about to open his mouth, Gallio said unto the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness, O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you: But if it be a question of words and names, and of your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters.
Acts 18:14-15

The apostle Paul served Christ, whose followers he had formerly persecuted, with untiring zeal. Now, during his second missionary journey, he was being accused by his fellow Jews and had been brought before the proconsul Gallion. At first, no decision was reached, which benefitted Paul and the preaching of the gospel. In the words of today's text, the proconsul refused to form a judgment on the accusation.
What Gallion said sounds quite modern: he would not judge religious questions. Centuries later, there were bitter struggles in the west over the relationship between religion and the state, before their distinct status was established. Christians favour religious freedom not merely for themselves but also because people cannot be compelled to confess Christ. This must be a decision of faith. The New Testament teaches that the church was not called to rule over the world, but to follow Christ in all His sufferings.
Reading Gallion's words gives the impression that his attitude rose from personal disinterest. However good it may be that he made no judicial decision, his personal indifference towards the matter is perilous. Passing Christ and the cross nonchalantly by is tantamount to rejecting eternal salvation which is offered us through the gospel.
Today's reading: 2 Samuel 23

(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are "the dead," and who are those "baptized for the dead"? The next verse gives an important hint: "Why do we also endanger ourselves every...More
