“Father, give me…”

And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.
Luke 15:13

"Father, give me" With these words the younger son in the parable demanded his share of the paternal inheritance. The father surely must have imagined how his son would handle it, yet he paid out the money prematurely.
With a purse filled to capacity, the young man left the parental estate. In foreign parts he led what he thought was a glorious life. However, with his dissolute lifestyle, the fortune was soon spent. Just at that time, a famine arose. His friends abandoned him: everyone had to attend to his own survival. He had recently been the rich playboy; now he was a hungry tramp. In his need he found work with a farmer. He could look after the pigs. But even there he suffered from hunger.
Caring for the pigs made him realise how wrong it had been to turn his back on his father. He planned to go back and say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son." Would the father receive him? He set out with a beating heart.
With what longing the father had waited for his lost son to return! When he glimpsed him a long way off, he ran out towards him, put his arms around him and kissed him.
Despite the son's wretched appearance the father accepted his son's confession and forgave him his guilt.
Jesus told this story as an example of how God receives the lost who return to Him and confess their guilt.
Today's reading: Ecclesiastes 5

The Lord Jesus told His disciples that they would be given an understanding in "the mystery of the kingdom of God." He also spoke of another class of people to whom everything would be spoken in parables; these He described as, "them who are without." How solemn that God should...More

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
