The coming of the Holy Spirit...

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Acts 1:8

The coming of the Holy Spirit to this earth on the day of Pentecost had a tremendous effect. The disciples, who, fearful of intimidation, had once met hidden behind locked doors, now suddenly preached freely the gospel of Jesus Christ, the despised and hated Nazarene. And it was not a flash in the pan, mere momentary enthusiasm. The sobriety of Peter's sermon in Acts 2 and the testimony of the early Christians as recorded in the book of Acts show how convinced they were. The Holy Spirit dwelt in them and armed them, weak vessels as they were, with divine power.
This power was felt by their listeners. The words they heard penetrated to their hearts and pricked their consciences. There was still hope for these people. They followed the apostles' call, turned to God, believing the gospel, and themselves received the Holy Spirit.
Since then, as far as the Holy Spirit is concerned, there has been no change. He still works by means of weak persons. Obstacles that hinder His work only arise when we act in contradiction or disobedience to the Word of God.
And the effect on listeners is also still the same. No one would be saved if the Holy Spirit were not at work on people's hearts and consciences. Let us not forget that through the Holy Spirit, God's power is present and active.
Today's reading: Ecclesiastes 8

MEAL OF REMEMBRANCE

The Holy Communion is a very significant meal. Unlike regular meals, it a meal of remembrance. When some people take this meal, they forget to heed the instruction in today's Bible reading where the Lord repeatedly said "this do in remembrance of Me". In other words, the meal reminds us of God's power of...More
