Christ the Saviour (2)

And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
Matthew 1:21

Christ the Saviour (2)
Before Jesus Christ came to earth, God had granted those who trusted Him deliverance and freedom from earthly affliction. However, the decisive act of salvation, deliverance from sins and eternal salvation, still had to be fulfilled. For this, the Son of God came to earth.
This had been prophesied long before in the Old Testament, and the first announcement in the New Testament points to it. His Name was to be called Jesus. That is: the Lord is salvation. This Name is His, because "He will save his people from their sins."
This offer of the forgiveness of sins was not to be limited to the Jews alone. When the Samaritans became acquainted with Jesus, they testified: "We know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world" (John 4:42).
Sadly, the majority would not recognise Jesus as the Saviour. When He was hanging on the cross, He was mocked: "He saved others, Himself he cannot save" (Matthew 27:42). Those scoffers failed to understand that He was taking all suffering upon Himself voluntarily: in His death on the cross He bore God's punishment so as to lay the foundation for our salvation.
After His death, resurrection and ascension, Jesus Christ was proclaimed as the only One, in whom "we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). That is the only way by which we can escape God's righteous punishment, which we deserve, and obtain eternal salvation.
(to be continued on Thursday)
Today's reading: Acts 4:1-22
