Impoverished for you (1)

For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
2 Corinthians 8:9

Impoverished for you (1)
The Christians in Judea went persecuted and many of them had forfeited all their possessions. The apostle Paul, who ministered primarily in what is now Turkey and Greece, was aware of their situation. So he asked the churches that had arisen through his ministry to support their fellow believers in Judea financially.
In his first epistle to the Corinthians, Paul had exhorted them to make regular collections. (cf. 1 Corinthians 16:1-3). In this letter, he again tactfully encourages them to continue. To achieve this, he cites the example of the Christians in Macedonia, who had in fact gone beyond their means to donate for believers in Judea (cf. 8:3). Here, however, he reminds them of the finest example of all: "our Lord Jesus Christ".
From eternity, the Lord Jesus Christ has been the Son of God. Today's verse tells us emphatically that He became Man, whose humiliation reached its extreme when He suffered death for us on the cross (cf. Philippians 2:6-8). Other than by His atoning death, we cannot be saved nor receive the immense spiritual blessings that believers are to share with Him eternally. If the word "poor" in our text has mainly a figurative sense, it is nevertheless true and significant that Jesus was poor in a literal and material sense during His life on earth. This we shall consider tomorrow.
Today's reading: Acts 17:1-15

LIFE IN ABUNDANCE 1

Under normal circumstances, no human being desires to be a nonentity. The various forces in the world however, are responsible for many people spending their entire life amounting to nothing and dwelling in the valley of not-well-to-do persons. The Almighty God Himself in making man did not intend for him to be a...More

Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (10)
A spiritual treasure had been entrusted to the apostle Paul that he wished to share with the Christians in Rome. It did not come from his own abilities or knowledge. What he wished to impart to them he had himself received...More
