The burial of an elderly man...

Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working? Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?
Luke 15:6-7

The burial of an elderly man has just taken place in the village cemetery. The widow followed the coffin deeply troubled. The deceased had expressed his wish that there should be no religious service. So the coffin was simply lowered into the grave, and there followed a painful silence. It seemed impossible to leave that place without a word of consolation and farewell and without a word of consolation and farewell and without a prayer. The silence became oppressive.
Then a friend of the family asked the widow if he might say a few words. He opened his Bible and read: "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). He added a few words and then prayed. He commended the family and all present to the mercy of God.
Later the gardener of the cemetery approached this Christian and spoke to him: "Excuse me, you must be a priest or a pastor." - "No, I am neither. I am simply a Christian believer who has been redeemed through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross." When he noticed that the gardener had tears in his eyes, he added, "Don't cry, Christ died for you, too." - "Yes, I know: I have found out." the gardener answered quietly.
At an open grave, the Word of God had proved its living power once more. A person had been born again. What a cause for joy in heaven over that additional soul!
Today's reading: 1 Kings 8:12-36
