...life beyond the grave

No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
Luke 16:13

The 16th chapter of the gospel of Luke gives us a brief insight into the life beyond the grave (vv.19-31). There we find two men, one of whom was rich on this earth, the other poor. What became of them in the world beyond?
Let us state this at the outset: one cannot deduce from this description that all who have suffered in this life will be comforted there, nor that those richly blessed with goods in their earthly life will then experience eternal torment. That would contradict the clear teaching of the Bible in many other passages.
The decisive thing was that that prosperous man had been egoistic with his wealth. He had lived for himself in luxury and abundance and not cared either about God nor his neighbor. He "died and was buried".
Lazarus had been a poor beggar. But when the time came for him to die, he was "carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom", i.e. the joy of paradise, where he was received, because he knew God.
The rich man's fault was not possessing wealth, but in trusting in it and never showing the least consideration for God, to whom he owed everything, and in failing to give the poor anything. Lazarus' virtue was not being poor, but his trust in God.
The difference between these two people lay not in their possessions but in what filled their hearts. One loved God, the other loved himself.
Today's reading: Proverbs 21:17-31

LIFE IN ABUNDANCE 1

Under normal circumstances, no human being desires to be a nonentity. The various forces in the world however, are responsible for many people spending their entire life amounting to nothing and dwelling in the valley of not-well-to-do persons. The Almighty God Himself in making man did not intend for him to be a...More
