Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (9)

For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.
Romans 1:9-10

Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (9)
In verse 1, the good news was called "the gospel of God"; here we have "the gospel of His Son". The first term indicates the origin. The good, liberating message for lost sinners could come only from God. When it concerns the way in which the salvation of the lost was actually brought about, then the Son of God and the work of redemption He accomplished stand in the foreground.
Paul was called by the Lord to proclaim this gospel. He carried out this ministry not as a burdensome duty, but with heartfelt joy and dedication. He would never forget the liberating, pleasing effect the message of grace had had on himself. So his heart motivated him to make this great salvation known to others in its entire scope.
Paul had already undertaken lengthy journeys in this ministry. His attention was directed primarily to unevangelised fields. Yet he felt affection for the Christians in Rome and had long proposed a visit there. (cf. Romans 15:19-24).
Until then, a visit to Rome had not corresponded with God's will and leading. But Paul prayed constantly and fervently for the well-being of the believers in Rome and that God would eventually grant him an opportunity to visit the assembly in Rome.
(to be continued next Sunday)
Today's reading: Proverbs 22:1-14

God in His grace has centered every blessing for us in Christ. Without Christ, we have nothing, nothing but our sins; with Christ we have all things, and therefore want nothing in addition to Christ. As...More

NEW LIFE IN CHRIST

There is a nature that is of the Earth and there is a nature that is of Heaven. Since the fall of man, the earthly nature of man has become corrupted and therefore is greatly under the influence of the kingdom of Satan. Characteristic features of this nature are: wickedness, moral perversion - sodomy and all sorts of...More
