Let us imagine this scene for a moment:

And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.
Mark 1:40-41

Let us imagine this scene for a moment: a man bearing the marks of leprosy and with certain death before him, sees just one chance. Jesus Christ can heal; He has done so for others. They did not lack confidence in Jesus' power even over diseases. It was something else that he lacked, trust in the Son of God's good will.
Transfer this to our situation! Will the Lord save me? Even if all my resolutions to break with my former way of life have failed up to now? If my prayers don't seem to have had any effect? Any other problem that raises doubt in the Person of the Son of God of His grace and mercy can be inserted here.
Jesus Christ is willing! He said so expressly to the leper. There can be no doubt as to His readiness. We can of course not be sure whether he will remove a certain earthly difficulty. In the final instance, it is a question of much more, freeing us from a greater need, the forgiveness of our guilt before God.
This guilt defiles us tremendously. Leprosy is thus an apt illustration of our situation. What use would the cure of a temporal illness be, if one did not have eternal forgiveness? This is what you can expect from Jesus Christ. He is willing, but are you?
Today's reading: Proverbs 24:1-16
