Conversion – from bondage to freedom (4)

Whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
John 8:34.36; Galatians 5:1

Conversion - from bondage to freedom (4)
Natural man finds the compulsion to commit sins irresistible, however forcefully he may dispute the fact. Sooner or later he succumbs. This demonstrates the truth of the Lord Jesus' statement that people are slaves of Satan and sin.

Holy Scripture gives us a fitting illustration of this sad state in the maniac of Gadara (Mark 5, 1 - 20). Nothing could prevent the self-destruction he inflicted on himself, nothing until he encountered the Lord Jesus Christ. What a change took place then! He was found "sitting and clothed and in his right mind" (v. 15).

In our natural condition we little realise how helplessly we are held in Satan's bondage. Through the work and Person of the Lord Jesus we learn the truth about ourselves, and the truth makes us free (cf. John 8, 31.32). The acceptance of salvation through faith in His atoning death at Calvary, by which He also vanquished Satan's power, brings us "into the glorious liberty of the children of God" (Romans 8, 21).

Slaves could be liberated only when a benefactor paid for their redemption. This is precisely what the Lord Jesus did for us at Calvary (cf. 1 Peter 1, 18.19). This change of state is a further blessing resulting from conversion. May we, by His grace, stand firm on this foundation of liberty!

The Lord Jesus told His disciples that they would be given an understanding in "the mystery of the kingdom of God." He also spoke of another class of people to whom everything would be spoken in parables; these He described as, "them who are without." How solemn that God should...More

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
