Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (107)

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
Romans 6:1.2

Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (107)
Paul has demonstrated that the riches of God'es grace cancelled the damage caused by sin. That applies to every believer.

What should then be the response of those who by faith in Christ have a share in His rich grace? Should they continue sinning in order to make God's grace stream forth in even greater abundance?

"Certainly not!" says the apostle, totally rejecting such a thought, which can only arise among those who know God's grace merely superficially. Their hearts cannot have been truly moved by the gospel. Speaking thus simply shows that they do not possess new life; their hearts have been hardened towards God's goodness, which leads to repentance and conversion (cf. Romans 2, 4; Jude v.4).

If we have obtained the forgiveness of our sins, then we, too, have "died to sin". This fact should have a determining influence on our life.

As sinners we served sin, that evil power in human nature. We were alive to sin and dead to God. But the converse applies to believers: regarding sin, which they formerly served, they have died. So how could they still wish to serve it?

To what extent has the Christian "died to sin", however? This aspect is dealt with in detail in the following verses.

When You Have A Vision

I was not disobedient to the vision.' Acts 26:19 NIV

When God gives you a vision for your life, you need to know how to:

(1) Hold it. Your vision is governed by a time frame: If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place.' (Habakkuk 2:3 NLT) Some of us can...More

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (113)

He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, him my Father will honour.
John 12:25.26.
