Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (109)

If we have been united together in the likeness of his death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of his resurrection, knowing this that our old man was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin.
Romans 6:5 - 7

Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (109)
"As Christ was raised from the dead", so, too, the Christian is called upon to "walk in newness of life" (v. 4). And soon he will be fully united with Christ in physical resurrection.

In Christ's death believers have already been united with Him. God sees them as having died with Christ. "Our old man was crucified with him." The expression "old man" embraces all the unpleasant characteristics found in Adam's descendants as the fruit of their sinful nature.

The "old man" was crucified with Christ. We know this, although we do not feel it, for God accomplished it in Christ, apart from us. We know it, however, because God has said so. Faith in God's Word gives the believer access to the fact and its liberating consequences.

The victory over the power of sin was achieved through Christ's death. Being made one with Christ in His death gives the believer a share in His victory. Formerly, sin reigned in our life and made its mark. But now we no longer have to serve sin.

As a ruling power, sin can only work in a living person. And only a living person can be accused of it. But believers have died and have therefore been pronounced free from sin.

NEGATIVE LIVING

Life comprises of positive and negative elements. As a matter of necessity, it is not good for someone to opt for negative living. The fact that Jesus Christ was destined to die for the sin of the whole world does not exonerate Judas Iscariot from the evil that led him to the idea of betraying the King of Glory....More
