Silence at Sinai

Be patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer. I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined to me and heard my cry.
Romans 12:12; Psalm 40:1

Silence at Sinai
The story of Sinai is extraordinary (cf. Exodus 32). Moses went up the mountain to receive instructions from God. His brother Aaron was with the people down in the plain waiting for him to return. Forty days waiting in silence proved too long for them. So Aaron made a golden calf in the image of Egyptian gods. And he announced that that calf was their god and proclaimed a feast that the people enjoyed. Then Moses descended with the tablets of the law, causing confusion among those impatient people.

What is the lesson here for us, dear Christians? If, during a period of testing and silence on God's part, I seek deliverance according to my own thinking rather than wait for God's help, I shall fail to learn His response, for this comes from patiently reading His Word and praying. I risk preferring my ideas to overcome the silence that troubles me. Yet filling the silence with thoughts that are not God's answer will resolve nothing; on the contrary, it will only cloud my pathway.

Similarly, it is dangerous to give others an answer that does not come from God. We should often humbly say, "I do not know." We do not know why they are going through such a trial or a desert scene. We can encourage them, or even pray with them. There are so many incomprehensible factors. But we can support them as they await God's response.

When You Have A Vision

I was not disobedient to the vision.' Acts 26:19 NIV

When God gives you a vision for your life, you need to know how to:

(1) Hold it. Your vision is governed by a time frame: If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place.' (Habakkuk 2:3 NLT) Some of us can...More

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (113)

He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, him my Father will honour.
John 12:25.26.
