A secure anchor

We have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the presence behind the veil.
Hebrews 6:18.19

A secure anchor
When we entered a relationship of faith with Jesus Christ on our conversion, the direction our life took turned heavenwards. We set out on the journey to heaven, where our Lord is at present.

In today's verse our life of faith is compared with a voyage in a boat of the period when this scripture was written. Journeys by sea were then so dangerous that one could never be sure of reaching one's destination.

Believers do not have this uncertainty, however. Although we may experience many a storm and be up to our neck in difficulties, we shall never be submerged. Why not? Our anchor has been secured in heaven.

In the final verse of Hebrews 6 we read that Jesus Christ has already entered heaven as our forerunner. There He acts as our High Priest, interceding for us, so that we reach our heavenly destination. Through Him we are inseparably bound to heaven, as if with a strong rope. His presence there guarantees that our hope will be fulfilled and that we shall arrive in the heavenly harbour.

In the storms of life we thus have a sure and firm promise that no-one can take from us: The Lord Jesus will come again to take us to Himself in heaven! Let us then not lose courage in our difficulties, but ever direct our eyes towards the goal.

HOW PERSUADED?

In 2 Timothy 4:10, Demas - a co-labourer with Paul was floored by his love for the world. He became a victim of comfort. Today, many people are also becoming prayerless and shifting their or trust from God to uncertain riches. They are now tending towards the belief that money can fix everything. If you are in such...More

A LESSON FROM GOLIATH

At the first sight of David, Goliath despised him. He was amazed that the children of Israel could find no other man to fight him than a young boy. As if that was not enough, Goliath did not see any conventional weapon of war on David. So he asked, "Am I a dog?" The first lesson we have to learn from this story as...More

Always Be Humble

Who am Ithat you have brought me this far?' 2 Samuel 7:18 (NIV 2011 Edition)
A MEMBER of parliament took his little daughter to visit Westminster Abbey. As she stood looking up at its magnificent columns, her father asked, What do you think, sweetheart?' With childlike candour she replied, I was...More

Forgive And Move On (2)

Anyone who starts ploughing and keeps looking back isn't worth a thing to God's Kingdom!' Luke 9:62 CEV

If you're wise, you'll do four things:

(1) Focus on the road ahead. By looking in the rear-view mirror instead of what's up ahead, you'll end up in a ditch. Focus on the fact you've...More
