Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (112)

Do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
Romans 6:12.13

Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (112)
As descendants of Adam believers formerly stood under the dominion of sin. But they died with Christ and were thus redeemed from the bondage of sin. This fact must always be kept in mind (v.11).

It is true that sin still dwells in them, and that a Christian can be led astray by it. If he is not watchful, he will sin. But a believer no longer sins compulsively, and in the measure in which his new life and the power of the Holy Spirit effectively work in him, he will not need to sin.

Sin must no longer determine our life. What became valid for us through Christ's death, because we died with Him, should become visible henceforth in the details of our daily life. A believer should therefore not continue to place his members in the service of unrighteousness. His "members" are all the areas of his human ability and activity. Instead, Christians should place themselves on principle once for all at God's disposal, so that his "members" continually carry out righteous deeds.

Through the work of Christ a believer has become "alive from the dead". As such he should lead his life for God. Moreover, whereas it was formerly bondage for him to serve sin, it is joy for his new life to be able to serve God.

What shall the baptized for the dead do if those that are baptized rise not at all? Why also are they baptized for them?
(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are "the dead," and who are those "baptized for the dead"? The next verse gives an important hint: "Why do we also endanger ourselves every...More
