Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (113)

Sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under the law, but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness.
Romans 6:14 - 16

Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (113)
Believers have "died with Christ" in order to walk in "newness of life". Sin and the law have no longer any power over a dead person. A Christian therefore stands "under grace". God has so ordered conditions that we can lead our life free from the dominion of sin.

If a believer no longer stands under the law, does it make no difference if he still sins? Paul rejects this thought decisively. A Christian who has come to know God's liberating grace cannot possibly wish to continue sinning. The law brought the magnitude of our guilt to light besides the fact that we cannot save ourselves (ch. 5, v. 20). For the believer, however, grace is a powerful spur and the moral strength for a life of holiness.

A compromise is not possible! Either we serve the Saviour on the basis of grace and redemption and follow Him obediently. Then practical righteousness will be visible to all: everything will be in agreement with God. And whoever possesses divine life, does not sense it to be a hard, but rather a satisfying service. Or else someone prefers sinning. If so, he should not be deceived: it means submitting to a hard master and will lead inevitably to destruction.

YOU CAN BE HIS WITNESS

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
