She had led a good life, caring faithfully for...

How then can a man be righteous before God? Or how can he be pure who is born of a woman? If even the moon does not shine, and the stars are not pure in his sight, how much less man, who is a maggot, and a son of man, who is a worm?
Job 25:4 - 6

She had led a good life, caring faithfully for her children and endeavouring to do good all her life. That did not give her perfect peace, but she hoped that had placed enough "on the scales" to be accepted by God.

Then came her terminal illness. She had heard the gospel of Jesus many times; suddenly the question plagued her whether her good deeds would be sufficient when she entered eternity. A believer noticed her unease and inquired after the cause.

"I don't know whether I can stand before God," the woman said. She had suddenly realised that something essential was missing, if she had to appear before God. So she confessed her sins before God and accepted the Lord Jesus and His work of redemption by faith. She was assured of her salvation and became calm. Three days later she passed away.

She did not die in unrest or doubt, but in peace and assurance. She had been saved through faith in the Saviour-God, "not by works of righteousness that we have done, but according to his mercy" (Titus 3, 5).

That is what everyone must learn: good works cannot undo our sins. Putting things in order with God comes only by faith in Christ and the redemption He procured. The woman had taken advantage of her last chance. The only sure chance for each of us is now!

A Statement Of Purpose To Live By

Always give yourselves fully.' 1 Corinthians 15:58 NIV

Next time you pass a McDonald's, think about this statement from the one of the founders: Ray Kroc. Press on! Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent....More
